EWMA

Definition / Formula

How much the coin is moving right now: the typical size of one 5-minute move, in percent, weighted towards the most recent bars.

r     = ln(close / previous close)       per 5-minute bar
var   = 0.94 * var + 0.06 * r^2          updated every bar (lambda = 0.94)
EWMA  = sqrt(var) * 100                  shown as % per 5-minute bar
  • Reading it: 0.50% means a typical 5-minute move for this coin is currently about ±0.5%.
  • Memory: recent bars dominate. A bar’s weight halves every ~11 bars (~56 minutes), so a single spike fades over roughly 2 to 4 hours.
  • Closed bars only: the bar that is still forming is never included. The value changes once per closed 5-minute bar.
  • Input: the stored 5-minute history: 21 weekdays on the weekday calendar, 20 weekend days on the weekend calendar, today’s partial day counted as one of them. A value needs at least 60 returns, that is 61 bars.
  • Context only: EWMA never decides a tier. It only hides rows when its MIN filter is set.

UI Breakdown

EWMA column, every state, labelled

Centred text at 11 px in a muted tone, two decimals and a percent sign. The cell shows an em dash when there are fewer than 61 bars, when the variance is zero, or while a TradFi instrument is closed for the weekend.

The bands are a reading guide; the cell itself has no colour coding. EWMA is most informative during the New York session.

Summary: EWMA is the coin’s current 5-minute volatility, weighted to the last hour or two; the highest values are the coins moving most right now.
