RVOL

Definition / Formula

Relative volume of the most recent 5-minute bar against the same time-of-day slot in previous sessions. One 5-minute bar against the mean of the same 5-minute slot, with no aggregation.

RVOL = volume(last 5m bar) / mean(volume of the same session slot over the lookback)

Slot: the bar’s 5-minute position counted from the open of the session it falls in: Tokyo 09:00 to 17:00, London 08:00 to 16:30 or New York 09:30 to 16:00, local time. Where two sessions overlap, the later-opening one counts.

Lookback: prior sessions only, taken from the stored history of 21 days on the weekday calendar or 20 days on the weekend calendar, today being one of those days. The mean uses as many prior sessions as exist; one is enough.

Bars: closed 5-minute bars only; the value changes once per closed bar. Volume is in base units.

Outside all three sessions: the base switches to the same 5-minute slot of the UTC day in prior days. The tooltip reads 24/7 fallback — no session open.

No prior session for the slot: the cell is empty. No value is shown, so it is never confused with a bar that traded zero volume.

Special state: an em dash while a TradFi instrument is closed for the weekend. The tooltip gives the next session open in UTC.

UI Breakdown

RVOL column, every state, labelled

track   0x |--------------------------------| 10x
fill       |==========|                          width = clamp(RVOL / 10 * 100, 0, 100)
BTC tick | BTC RVOL on the same scale
label                                  2.50x

The track spans 0x to 10x. The fill is the value on that scale and stops at the right edge; a value above 10x shows a full bar while the label keeps counting. The gold tick marks BTC RVOL on the same scale.

The fill turns gold when the row leads BTC by 1.0 or more. When BTC has no RVOL (BTC is not in the grid, or has no prior session for the slot), there is no BTC tick and no row turns gold.
